If you had one story to tell...
What would it be?I mean a true story
A personal story
Maybe a hard storyWhat would it be?
I imagine you are considering telling that story someday - maybe soon - and want to learn more.So thank you for being here.At the end of this, I will invite you to work on that story with me - if you're a good fit - to help you get on some big podcasts (including ours) so people around the world who need to these kinds of stories - your story - can actually hear it.No surprises. No pressure. No bullshit. If you just want those details you can scroll down but best to have a look and listen to everything on this page. Now I must remind you...
You're not going to live forever
That's it.Don't wait too long.Tell that story - please! But you need to know...
Your story may not actually be a story
Now I could be wrong, of course, but most people don't know what a personal story is - and is not.Why would they? Almost no one learns this.I want to clear that up, but first let me share with you why people tend NOT to tell that story.
They don't think anyone wants to hear it or cares. They do.
They tried once but someone shut them down. That sucks.
They can't imagine how they would find the right words to convey their feelings. They can.
There's just too much to say in only one story. Probably not true.
They have fear around telling this story to other people. I get that.
Sound at all familiar?
Now, let me talk about this kind of story (also called personal narrative) so we are on the same page, and to dispel some myths and misconceptions.Personal stories are not essays, poems, speeches, rants, spoken word pieces - or anecdotes. They are a unique kind of craft and form of expression, and from what I've found, the most accessible way to convey our experiences.
A story is a story because it hinges entirely on internal change. No exceptions.
Change matters because it is this internal stuff - far more than the external - that creates connection, relatability and helps people feel less shitty and less alone.
Real connection is key. If you're not aiming for that, this probably isn't for you.
You can take almost anything you've gone through - even the hardest stuff - and turn them, shape them, carve them into personal stories. In fact, right now you have many potential stories (some even centered on the same set of experiences), but you have to start with just one.You get to decide. Now, here's where people tend to go "wrong."
I need to share everything that happened. You do not.
My personal experiences are the same as my personal stories. Not true.
The key to a good story is how I tell it. Nope.
I need to find some kind of happy ending. Bullshit.
I know exactly what my story is about. You probably don't (sorry).
Chances are that one story you want to tell is not just any story, but what I call a hard (or core) story. And they can be especially challenging to craft because they often feel big and long and confusing.- Like that time you really hurt someone
- Or that thing that doesn't have a happy ending
- Or that ongoing battle with depressionThese are also the stories that many people are most hesitant or worried to share because they're often quite personal and vulnerable. But these are the stories people most need to hear! Weird but true. And they need to right kind of space and support to finally emerge.
I won't be getting into all the components of the craft here, but I want you to listen to the personal stories below - all taken from our podcast - and if you want, listen closely for what makes these stories work (or perhaps do not work for you).
And here are some examples that are less than two minutes (and ideal for pitching podcasts!)
You can do this - and do it well
I want you to not stay silent, to speak up - soon! But not just talk about it...This craft - more than any I've ever found - allows you to speak your truth and talk about it honestly, deeply and powerfully.I want you to craft - and tell - your story so people pay attention and walk away changed. And I don't want you to die without telling the stories you need to tell, in a way that feels good and true and makes a real difference.People need to hear your story.
In fact, let me ask you that question one more time.If you felt like you could actually talk honestly and not be silenced or shut down or any of that bullshit AND had the skills and support to do it really well...What story would you tell?
I want to introduce you to some people that have worked with us and told these kinds of stories on our podcast and stages.
Bob told the story about his sister's suicide.
Shweta told the story about her eating disorder.
Scott told the story about his addiction and incarceration.
Manuela told the story about infidelity.
Andrew told the story about losing his father.
Carol told the story about her terminal illness.
Elizabeth told the story about trying to live with wanting to die.Over the years, there have been many more people who've crafted and told these kinds of stories. Some were new to this
Some were notAll were honest
With some fire and gritAnd many of them have said kind words ---
There's something else.I don't just teach personal story. I tell them, too - and that matters.
It matters because too many people are teaching things they haven't done themselves. You might notice above that I didn't include dates. I told those stories between 2020 and 2024.Even though I'd spent years teaching and talking in front of people, it took me a very long time to finally tell a personal story on a stage in front of people. And I still get nervous because this stuff can be hard. But we can make it - a lot less hard.
This is how I feel about this stuff now.
I want to help you craft that story, from beginning to end and help you tell it on podcasts and stages so people around the world can actually hear you and hopefully feel a little less shitty and a little less alone.
You're a good fit for this if...
You are ready to tell that story you aren't telling (or maybe telling only to yourself).
